The party with the most votes should lead the government even if they have less than 50% of the vote?

Reasons To Disagree

51% of the vote is sufficient enough to form a government, wherever those votes come from. If a coalition can command that much influence in Parliament, then why not form a government? 62 MPs from different parties is still a majority over 60 from a sole party.

Imagine this scenario: Party A has 46%, but Party D has 42% and Party C has 9%. Parties B and C have similar ideas. the B-C coalition should govern, not A by itself. The majority of the population supports the B-C ideas.

Reasons To Agree

Idealy that would be the case, but they will still need the support to get essentials like the budget passed otherwise the Govt can't function.

Representatives should be held accountable to their pre-election promises. Ideally providing a personal guarantee. The government as a whole should be held to lawful limits. I think the fastest way to do this would be to elect a party which stands on these principles and recognises their role as public servants and mere delegates of the publics ultimate power.
