Reasons To DisagreeOf course it should be left optional, it should be left up to an individual whether they want to put money towards their retirement or not, also they are yet to answer the question where exactly our money goes - because it sure isn't going into singular bank accounts kept safe for 40 years. 3 November 2007
The value of the voluntary is worth everything! Choice is a hallmark of democratic thinking. Be very suspicious of anything that is compulsory. 10 December 2007
There is a case for national super. It seems we can afford one for politicians - make that universal - they don't deserve better than their electorate! 28 September 2008
Kiwisaver is just a total joke. Join kiwisaver and get a free $1000 top up. Where is that money coming from? Follow that up with the government matching the pay put into kiwisaver. Again, where is this money coming from? If you make it compulsory, that means everyone will be on kiwisaver. So 4.4 million times $1000 plus what ever else they put in to match our pay. Brilliant. I'm glad that the visionaries at labour had the foresight to help all of our poor people. No...the idea is unbelievable. 7 June 2011
Kiwisaver definitely should not be compulsory, people who do not take out a retirement policy should not expect to retire or have the same privileges as they who do. 14 October 2013

Reasons To AgreeWe have a large population that will not make any attempt to provide for their retirement. These people need compulsion to save. I believe the intention for Kiwisaver is to make it compulsory, after an introductory period. 22 October 2007
Kiwis are too slack at saving. Compulsory saving now will reduce welfare down the line. Plus, I would rather have a tiny bit of freedom to choose taken away from me now and be rewarded in the far future with something to look forward to. Hands down, no brainer for me, especially since I find it very hard to save. Plus all the money saved will go to good investments now 11 August 2011

Reasons for Remain Neutral
I'm sure its going to end up compulsory but it would be better left optional.
If Kiwisaver is to be made compulsory, then the Govt should be involved in administration of the fund. Private Super schemes are about making profits for the company, NOT about helping you save for the future, there is always the possibility that the money you put into a private scheme will be no better than hiding your money under the mattress.
