Yeah - right - especially when the contract is for one hours work! The best way to encourage job creation is by an individuals terms of employment being freely negotiated between the applicant and the employer. If the employer can't find anyone to agree to his terms and conditions, he goes out of business. If the worker doesn't like those terms or conditions - he looks elsewhere. 20 July 2006
At a time when the country is trying to increase productivity, that's not the way to do it. Looking beyond that, lengthy leave should be something that is earned over a relatively long period of employment. I am an immigrant from a country that is more prosperous than New Zealand. The standard practice there is 2 weeks to begin with, 3 weeks after 10 years, 4 weeks after 5 years. Several national and/or local holidays usually add about a week to all of these. There is really no way to prosper without work. 18 August 2006
Many people have enough trouble coping with the current holiday pay without adding an extra week or two. Those on wages, when on holiday, miss out on overtime and untaxed benefits which for many families are vital to survival. 7 January 2007
The problem is not with the contracts, it's with managers. bums on seats is not a proxy for productivity. 14 December 2007
