Reasons To Disagree

18 year olds can vote, drink and drive (respectively) but can't buy tobacco? Doesn't make much sense.

5 January 2006

This crazy emotionally based logic will drive cigarettes underground and two things will happen. More people will smoke because its illegal,(just look at illegal drug use), and the government will cut of a huge fund of tax. Everyone is a loser with thos continuing witch hunt of the smoker

25 March 2006

An exercise in futility.

20 July 2006

so you can bring a child into the world at the mer age of 16 but you cannot smoke till 4 years after this? Thats really dumb

31 January 2008

you can choose to get married at 18, so you should be able to decide if you want to take up inhaling toxic substances like ciggers.

30 May 2008

nope.

30 April 2010

just leave it like it is. the policing not guaranteed. i see 14 yr olds smoking ...

1 May 2011

No. Although tabacco is harmful and addictive it is not like alcohol where it can cause people to act out of character and cause trouble.

29 June 2011

You can't set one age for some things and a different age for other things. Everything should be at 18.

21 July 2011

Should be made illegal completely. Most smokers I know (including myself) would love to be forced to quit. If it is illegal then we have no choice but to quit. But since if that ever happened is so far in the future and people will smoke, I think 18 feels right.

11 August 2011

At 18 you are an adult and should be responsible for any decisions you make

Reasons To Agree

In this day and age there is no justification to start smoking as it is a health hazard having a big drain on the health system as a consequence of personal choice of the past. It should be made clear that smoking is personal choice but smoking in public places it is banned and any health care deriving from smoking is at the smokers expense and if there is a vacancy in hospital only after all other cases are cleared.

13 September 2005

Less people will die

29 April 2006

Definitely. I don't think that is enough either. It should be made illegal.

20 May 2007

Again, Tobacco is very harmful. Everyone REALLY needs to try to get away from it. The age for purchasing tobacco should be changed to twenty.

16 July 2008

absolutely. the older the better. lets protect the younger generation from themselves.

15 May 2009

Ive got an idea where people should register and have a licence to smoke, But by doing so are exempt from government funding in the health system for any thing slightly related to smoking. They must have there own health insurance or be given morphine only to relieve the pain while they die a death of there own fault.

2 July 2009

Smoking is disgusting and bad for health. If it must be done the smokers should at least only be alloud to do it in designated smoking areas.

28 July 2009

yea or i should be banned

26 April 2010

Yes, but only as an interim step to banning it altogether.

10 October 2010

If we're trying to decrease the amount of smokers, then increasing the age range is better so that they're actually fully mature and know what they're doing to their future

21 May 2017

Reasons for Remain Neutral

I'm tempted to agree, as the harder it is to get started, the less likely you are to become addicted. That said, I'd be interested in statistics on health care - i wonder how much the tax on cigarettes covers the costs? And given people who die from smoking-related illnesses, die earlier, what cost savings there are there? It's probably impossible to know the real cost to society, given that there is unlikely to be any data on whether smokers or non-smokers are more productive in society.

30 January 2006

tobacoo should just be banned

15 February 2006

We need an age of maturity and then all these things can be set at that age.

19 April 2007

I find smoking to be a vice not worth my effort. I can't say what joy it brings smokers, but I hate the habbit. I couldn't care less if it was outlawed - tax revenue or otherwise!

27 December 2007

If you increase the age, kids will smoke so that they have a "bad boy/girl" image, but the harder to get, the better. Also, the health cost because of smoking is far greater than the tax revenue it creates.

7 August 2009

You are an adult at 18, you must be able to make your own decisions.

11 May 2011

I'd go for full prohibition, why are pussy footing on the question, surely we have other means to raise duty (taxes).
