NZ should decrease the interest repayment rates on student loans?

The repayment levels are low especially when interest rates are zero.

Why should a student get cheap money when someone else doesnt? Are they a better class of citizen now?

If you give someone something for nothing, they will not appreciate it; in fact will probably abuse it. Student loans should acrue a reasonable interest, but should have rebates available for suitable achievements in approved courses.

There should be interest and it should come from your income tax. Voluntary repayments additional- universal study support.

I'm a student loan borrower and i would prefer it if i paid it off quicker then i'll not have to worry about it in the future

No interest on student loan payments means that 1. there is no incentive to pay off the loan 2. Because of inflation the money being paid back is worth less than the money borrowed.

Reasons To Agree

If the government wants people to get out there and work, they should not penalise students through interest for doing so.

When we were charged interest it was very hard to pay off. I like the idea that it is interest free but failing that perhaps just a lump sum of interest.. say you borrowed $20000... add $3000 interest and then let us watch the figure go down. The only thing that annoyed me was getting no-where unless you made huge re-payments.

Penalise the countries future innovaters? Makes the decision to join the brain drain very attractive if your own country doesn't support their future! The students are the future and should have it much easier. Yet the slobs who do nothing and the unintellectual who can't see this simple truth are disagreeing...nurture the future
