Reasons To DisagreeSeems pretty common knowledge that the victims are largely ignored and forgotten. Their rights may have been ignored and violated by the perpetrators of crime, yet the criminals have to have their own rights so carefully protected every step of the way... even after guilt is proven. Crims should experience the withdrawl of rights and priveledges - much as they've done to their victims. 13 August 2005
Often restitution promised at restorative justice meetings doesn't in fact materialise. The police lack the manpower to ensure deals are kept. 14 February 2006
I think most often the victim is sentenced to life imprisonment don't you? Fear, injury, court costs, loss of independence generally. For the offender; fully funded analysis on their behaviour/childhood, a Mt Eden city view suite, court costs funded by the tax system and rehabilitation and early parole for being a good person. Terribly hard on families who have lost everything. 21 February 2006
we seem to get forgotten about, but the offender gets remembered 20 March 2006
I hate the fact that we have so many of one particular race involved in crime. Don't their elders know how to bring up kids in the modern world??? Let's all run back to our little patch and beat up some more little kids to death. God bless Lilly Bing. Would the world be better if all white people killed a black??? I don't think so but why would someone want all maori's to kill a white person if they weren't the biggest racist ever????? 20 July 2006
Law agencies hust don't have the resources to put into fair treatment of victims and so it's left to voluntary organisations like Victim Support. NZ legislation puts so many requirements on how crims are treated that it soaks up a lot of police, justice, customs, and corrections resources. 2 August 2006
Yeah - right! Like "restitution" from the criminal - at 10c per week! Like release of violent offenders to further offend. 16 December 2006
criminals are treated FAR better 10 May 2007
I'm getting fed up hearing so often how the lives of innocent people are torn to shreds by senseless acts by those who appear to fear no retribution 22 June 2008
Have experienced both first hand due to domestic violence. The police were amazing, encouraging and supportive. The justice system let us down ... prior convictions/incidences of domestic violence inflicted on more than one victim couldn't be raised. It felt like it came down to a 'beauty' contest and the charming bold face liar was believed over the less eloquent 'victim'. I feel short changed. We all knew he had done it but were hamstrung by the law/justice system. 15 June 2012
I am 55, over a period of 40 years I've reported number of issues to the police ranging from car theft, assualt, fraud etc, and I've been left wondering why have a police force at all. I've tracked my own stolen car, had to prosecute several thefts myself, and not once in 40 years have the NZ police even bothered to investigate or prosecute a single complaint in that time. 18 July 2012

Reasons To AgreeIn most cases. but in NZ the police have to be so brutish that they clash with a generally brutish population. 19 December 2007
too nice to the criminals 13 September 2008
Too nice of a treatment to criminals. In other countries when they tried to escape and got hurt they will leave them to die (deserve them right) in nz, they will bring them to hospital. There should be no treatment for them. Its their punishment. Be harsher and follow other countries harsher punishment before it is too late to address criminal problems 16 October 2012

Reasons for Remain Neutral
I think in the main the police and justice system do the best they can in difficult circumstances.
Victims are not the job of the police or the justice system.
